Workmen waiting to be taken down the drift on a ‘spake’ (man riding train) at Graig Merthyr Colliery, Pontarddulais. The men carry flame safety lamps as their only source of lighting underground. There is not a hard helmet to be seen as they were not generally introduced until the 1930s.
