Help & Support

1. What is Amgueddfa Cymru Images?

Amgueddfa Cymru Images is a picture library showcasing some of the best of Wales’ national collection without restrictions of copyright. We are both excited and proud to be able to share these carefully curated images with you in this special way. We hope they will bring inspiration and enjoyment.

Most importantly all of them are available to download immediately at medium-resolution – for FREE! If it’s high-resolution you are after, please email images@museumwales.ac.uk

2. What if you can’t find what you need?

This is only the beginning! We have 1000’s of images that we have not yet uploaded to the site so if you are looking to license a specific image that isn’t available, please contact us. For the full catalogue of our collections please visit Collections Online.

If the image you require has not been previously photographed or digitised, or the resolution of the current digital image does not meet your requirements, please contact us to make a request for new photography. Please be advised that this may incur a fee. Email images@museumwales.ac.uk

3. What can you find on Amguedddfa Cymru Images?

On the home page you can browse galleries of artworks, historic photographs and images of our objects, all of which have special relevance to Wales. You will find images representing the natural world, as well as archaeological, social and industrial history.

Not all images on the site are contained within the galleries on the home page, so if you see something you like, then search for the creator as there is a good chance there are more options available. This is only the beginning, and we’ll be adding more and more images over time so that you can keep coming back and find fresh content with each visit.

4. What is open licensing?

Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales’ Open Access Policy will make our public domain collections available to everyone for enjoyment, research and inspiration. We believe that adopting an open access strategy lets everyone access and use our collections in innovative ways. This includes digitised public domain artworks, and historical photographs from our social, industrial and archaeological collections.

Open licensing is an exciting venture for us because we get to share our collections with you in new ways. The best thing is that you can download FREE medium resolution images to use for anything you choose, including any commercial use.

Our free medium resolution images are available via Creative Commons open licences; either CC0 or CC BY-SA. If you need high-resolution images, we can offer those too, but they may incur a fee, please email images@museumwales.ac.uk

5. What is CC0?

If an artwork or photograph is out-of-copyright, then we offer medium-resolution images (up to 4000px) for free via a CC0 creative commons open licence. Amgueddfa Cymru does not claim copyright on the digital reproduction it has created of flatworks.

CC0 enables re-users to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, with no conditions.

You do not have to credit us but please acknowledge us where you can by using By permission of Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales. This helps to spread the word about our Open Policy. The more interest we can generate, the more time we can put into the project, and the MORE FREE IMAGES we can offer.

6. What is CC BY-SA 4.0?

If the artwork or photograph is still in copyright and Amgueddfa Cymru owns the copyright, or we hold copyright for a digital reproduction of a three-dimensional work or object, CC BY-SA means we have lifted all restrictions on using medium-resolution images up to 4000px.

CC BY-SA enables re-users to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format for commercial and non-commercial use, so long as attribution is given to both the creator and us by adding By permission of Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales to the credit. If you remix, adapt, or build upon the material, you must license the modified material under identical terms.

7. How do you search for images?

Search for any term that you are interested in via the quick search box. This is the big box on the home page, or the search box in the top right-hand side of each page. The system will search all the available information in the database to find images that contain the term.

To narrow your search, use AND between terms i.e. castle AND Pembrokeshire. Or you can use the Advanced Search (see below)

8. How do you carry out advanced searches?

An Advanced Search tool is available. Click on the three horizontal lines in the top left-hand side of each page to open the menu. Select Advanced Search and search within Title, Creator, Keywords, Place or Date. There is an option at the top of the window to search for images with either all criteria, or at least one.

Use the drop-down menu to select whether you want your search results to contain, match exactly, start with, or end with, the term you have entered.

i.e. Title contains “Davies this will only include items where Davies is in the Title (most likely a photograph or painting of someone called Davies) and will eliminate paintings by artists or photographers with the name of Davies.
