This chair was made for the World Fair Eisteddfod held in Chicago in 1893 - part of an international fair celebrating 400 years of the Columbus landing. It was designed by Isaac Davies of Chicago and features a carved American eagle, a Welsh harp and the Three Feathers on the back. It was won by Evan Rees (Dyfed) who had already won at least ten chairs and later became Archdruid in 1905 until his death in 1923.
As many as 40,000 people visited the Chicago Eisteddfod over a 4-day period, mostly from the cream of Welsh-American society. But it was the bards, musicians and choirs from Wales who swept the board in most of the competitions.
