A Welshman, with a leek pinned to his hat, eats bread and cheese, and raises a glass of ale in a toast. This is an affectionate image of identity and good fellowship, and may have been painted for a London Welsh society, such as the Ancient Britons, which was founded in 1715 to help distressed Welshmen and organise ceremonials on St David's day. The artist was influenced by earlier Dutch candle-lit scenes.
